FILM SCREENING: Eating Animals
EATING ANIMALS
BASED ON THE BOOK BY JONATHAN SAFRAN FOER
NARRATED AND PRODUCED BY NATALIE PORTMAN
A FILM BY CHRISTOPHER QUINN

Directed and produced by Christopher Quinn (Sundance award winner God Grew Tired of Us), Eating Animals tells the story of the beginning of the end of factory farming. Produced with Academy Award winner Natalie Portman and Jonathan Safran Foer, the film is the feature-length adaptation of Foer’s critically acclaimed book of the same name that starts out with a simple question — where do our eggs, dairy and meat come from? Through the intimate narratives of several farmers dedicated to bringing their trade – and the way we eat – back to its roots, the film explores the notion of stepping away from the practices of the past 40 years that have polluted our environment, endangered our health, and caused us all to be complicit in the inhumane treatment of animals. Looking at the costs we’ve incurred as our country has become dominated by massive industrial complexes designed to feed the masses, Eating Animals paints a picture of a future where traditional farming is no longer a distant memory, but is instead the only way forward.

Eating Animals is executive produced by the founders of Twitter, Evan Williams and Biz Stone.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT BY CHRISTOPHER QUINN
Few books have radically changed me in the way Eating Animals has. The writing hooked me from the start, because rather than shying away from the moral argument, it dares to place that firmly at the center of the book and ask something of us. It logically builds from one well-wrought premise to another, until reaching an irrefutable conclusion. Eating Animals boldly addresses the many points of view surrounding this issue. There is always an empathetic ear for everyone from the most avid meat-eater to the most partisan animal rights activist, and all those in between. The book is at once so thrilling, horrifying, uplifting, sad and absurdly funny, it has now taken on for me visual forms and cinematic significance that will bring its remarkable spirit to life again in a whole new medium—a film that will change the story we tell about the meaning of industrial farming, about our relationship with animals, and ultimately about what it means to be human.

FILM SCREENING: American Folk including Q&A with Joe Purdy
American  Folk
A  Film  By:  David  Heinz
Starring:  Folk  singers Joe  Purdy  &  Amber  Rubarth
featuring Krisha  Fairchild

When  their  plane  from  Los  Angeles  to  New  York  is  grounded  on  the  morning  of  September  11,  2001,  strangers  Elliott  (Joe  Purdy)  and  Joni  (Amber  Rubarth)  are  unexpectedly  thrust  together  amidst  the  chaos  of  that  historic  day.  With  little  in  common  but  both  needing  to  get  to  NYC  urgently,  they  accept  help  from Joni's  family  friend  Scottie  (Krisha  Fairchild)  who  lends  the  duo  a  rusty  old  1972  Chevy  Van.  The  shock  and  stress  of  9/11  quickly  threatens  to  derailtheir  cross  country  journey  until  the  pair  discover  what  they  do  have  in  common:  a  love for  old  folk  songs.  Armed  with  a  pile  of  guitars  left  in  the  van  from  Scottie’s  touring  days,  Elliott  and  Joni  raise  their  voices  together  (and  with  those  they  meet  onthe  road),                       re-discovering  the  healing  nature  of  music  and  bearing  witness  to  a  nation  of  people  who,  even  while  mourning,  manage  to  lift  each  other  up  in  the  wake  of  tragedy.

With  a  refreshing  gentleness  and  beauty,AMERICAN  FOLK lovingly  chronicles  the  spaces  between  the  suffering  and  fear,  where  music  has  the  power  to  connect.  Musicians  Joe  Purdy  and  Amber  Rubarth  give  nuanced  and  thoughtful  performances,  with  voices  that  are  uplifting  and  achingly  gorgeous.  Filmed  over  3,500  miles  in  14  states, AMERICAN  FOLK serves  as  a  love  letter  to  the  natural  beauty  of  America,  to  the  style  of  music  that  has  shepherded  us  through  historically  tough  times  and  to  the  kindness  of  all  of  the  "folk"  that  make  America what  it  is.
